Bright orange children’s chair by Verner Panton and produced by Vitra. Iconic mid-century Danish design.
PANTON JUNIOR Chair – designed by Verner PAnton in 1960 and produced by Vitra from 2008 – an iconic design, in children’s size. In very good condition.
By pushing the materials to the limit, Panton created one of the most award-winning chairs in modern furniture history – the PANTON Chair – the first single-materiale and single-form chair ever to be made!
The design idea was conceived in 1956 , as he designed a S-shaped chair for a furniture contest. His aim was to “design furniture that grows out of the floor and turns the furniture into something organic – which never has four legs”.
Panton changed the base of the original chair to a concave ‘tail’ – the siganture feature of the PANTON Chair – and made the first polypropylene model around 1960.
In 1963 Panton came across German manufacturer Vitra, and together they developed the chair for mass production. The first cantilevered stacking chair was produced in 1967 – the PANTON Chair.
Continually improved and updated by Vitra through three decades of developments in plastic technology, but it was not until 1999, that it was possible to produce the chair according to Panton’s original idea – out of durable, dyed-through plastic with a lustrous matte finish.
The version for sale here is the PANTON JUNIOR Chair – conceived by Panton around 1980, but not put into production until 2008. It is case in bright orange rigid polyurethane foam with a matte finish. It is identical to the regular model with regard to material and shape, just approx. 25 percent smaller than the full-sized PANTON Chair.
With its bright, cheerful orange color and smooth curves, the PANTON JUNIOR would fit perfectly in the children’s playroom. But it could just as well find use as a gorgeous design icon piece put on display or accenting a space.
