Detailed information

The ANT Chair – Model 3100, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1952 and produced by Fritz Hansen – a pair of iconic mid century design pieces – original vintage four-legged ANT chairs, in good vintage condition!

The 3100 or ANT chair is one of the most iconic chairs of the Danish modern era, with its pinched waistline. A pressure-molded, sliced veneer shell with an organic shape – just enough curvature to support the human body perfectly – and fitted on a four-legged steel frame with polished-chrome finish.

Arne Jacobsen was inspired by a plywood chair he himself had bought – designed by Charles Eames! Jacobsen then added Danish functionalism, and his (now famed) pure minimalist design ideas, to make the ANT Chair the first of its kind; a stacking chair of pressure molded laminated wood with a removable steel frame.

The chair was originally designed (in conjunction with Jacobsen being the architect behind the containing buildings) for the canteen, at (now) Danish pharmaceutical giant, Novo Nordisk in 1952, however at Fritz Hansen they had some concern as to the wider commercial potential. To convince Fritz Hansen, Jacobsen offered to buy all the chairs produced, if they did not sell, and as we now know the ANT chair did survive the initial skepticism.
Three months later the chair was presented at an exhibition, at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art. This paved the way for its huge international success, and thus also for later equally and even more famed AJ designs including the Series 7 chair, the Lilly chair – and even the Swan and Egg chair, which all utilize the veneer shell base production technique.

Originally produced with a three-legged frame, but in 1971 the four-legged ANT Chair was launched (after the death of Arne Jacobsen). Both versions are still in production by Fritz Hansen in a wide variety of veneers and finishes – and still popular as ever!

A perfect fit anywhere in the modern home. These chairs are truly timeless design icons!

This set of two chairs I have for sale is the vintage edition with four legs, coated in its original warm, chocolate brown lacquer. Fitted with new black shoes to avoid scratch marks on the floor.

Cleaned and packed in protective foam.
