Sven Vestergaard is a Danish painter and illustrator. At the age of 16, in 1952, he was employed at Royal Copenhagen as an apprentice in the overglaze department. Seven years later, he left Royal Copenhagen to pursue a career as an illustrator, working at various Danish advertising agencies and at the oldest newspaper in Denmark, Berlingske Tidende.
In 1975 Vestergaard returned to Royal Copenhagen as illustrator in the factory’s design studio and his illustrations were chosen for the annual Christmas Plate same year. Since 1986, Sven Vestergaard has designed all the Christmas Plates for Royal Copenhagen, although he started his own studio in 1989, and then worked on a freelance basis for Royal Copenhagen.
