About the design
The Tip-top pendant features 6 layered painted aluminum shades with white inner coating. The layered shades conceals the bulb, which in this case is a Colorenta bulb (a special elongated bulb). The pendant were produced by Design Forum in 6 different colors; aluminum, white, ocher, brown, violet and orange.
The story behind the Tip-top pendant is quite interesting. In the 1960s Jorgen Gammelgaard (the designer of the light) did consultancy work for the UN on Samoa, in Ceylon and in Sudan. During his stay in Samoa, Gammelgaard had a simple fluorescent tube as his only light. To get a better quality of light, he ingeniously tilted the horizontally hanging fluorescent tube 90 degrees, to an upright vertically position, and fitted it with a range “shades” cut from plastic.
This was the inspiration for the world famous Tip-Top from 1971, which immediately after his presentation was bought by the Danish Arts Foundation.
