About the design
The PH 80 floor lamp is designed by Poul Henningsen, and produced by Louis Poulsen since 1974 – and have been in the Louis Poulsen product range ever since.
It is a very appealing shaped floor lamp with a round black ABS base, from where a chrome plated stem emerge and carries three high gloss opal acrylic shades with a black and red polycarbonate reflector on top. The reflector ensures a warmth in the ambiance, while the opal shades softens the illumination and direct most of the light downwards, making for a very pleasant room lighting.
The PH 80 was put into production by Louis Poulsen after Henningsen’s death, as a celebration of what would have been his 80th birthday (hence the name). It is based on the principle of the reflective three-shade system – invented by Poul Henningsen in 1925-1926. Instead of glass, Louis Poulsen used opal acrylics to make a less expensive product with the same lighting qualities as a glass fixture. It was released in two models – a table lamp and a floor lamp, the latter is still in production, whereas the table lamp is no longer in production. In fact it was Louis Poulsen Designteam with Bent Gantzel-Boysen as head of design, who designed the PH 80, based on PH’s three-shade system – but marketed as other than the design of Poul Henningsen.
The piece shown in the photos is one of the first editions – recognized by the on/off string switch with a small Bakelite part at the end. At some pint the on/off switch was replaced by an on/off foot pedal placed at convenient height at the cord.
