About the design

The Starcluster or No. 1706 is a tiny taper holder designed by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk Designs in the 1960s.

12 droplet shaped holders, carefully arranged in a ring, each fitted with holes for tiny tapers (special pencil-thin candles with a diameter of 0.3″ / 7 mm). The candle holder has a rough, sandy, black cast iron finish and the six legs are fitted with small black enameled pads as to avoid scratching the furniture.

Quistgaard designed 14 different cast iron candle holders for tiny tapers in the 1960s for DANSK DESIGNS, among them the very popular Spider and this beautiful Starcluster. He also designed the special tiny taper candles to avoid dripping or unevenly melting, even when the tapers were slightly tilted, as they are in the Starcluster.

In the 1960s, the tiny taper holders were often used in flower arrangement, but today they are just used as display pieces or as decorative candle holders.

The Starcluster is often hallmarked IHQ (Jens Harald Quistgaard), Dansk Design and Made in Denmark.
