About the design
The Semi pendant light was designed in 1968 as a product of the creative partnership between two architecture students, Claus Bonderup and Torsten Thorup, and originally put into production by Fog & Mørup. It quickly went on to be one of the company’s best-selling lights, and remained in production right to the end and beyond. The light was so popular, that production continued throughout every merger that absorbed the Fog & Mørup brand – so you are able to find pieces with LYFA-Fog & Mørup labels, Lyskær-LYFA labels, Lyskær Belysning labels and Horn Belysning labels.
Reacting against the ‘cozy era’ that was dominating Denmark at the time, Bonderup and Thorup wanted to create a lamp that incorporated sharp, clean lines and a geometric shape. Their design was submitted for a competition at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture and won first prize.
Semi is a unique pendant light, based on two quarter-circles put together, back-to-back. With its distinctive arch-shaped, enameled metal shade, lightness of form and unique, timeless design, the elegant Semi lamp achieved great success in the 1980’s and became, at that time, the best-selling Danish design, gaining worldwide recognition and iconic status.
Originally produced in two sizes – SEMI MINI (18.5″ / 47 cm in diameter) and SEMI MAXI (27.6″ / 70 cm in diameter) and in several different colors: matte white, matte brown, bright black, bright red, brass lacquered and chrome-plated. At a later state different sizes were produced, both smaller than the SEMI MINI and slightly larger – to fill in the gap up to the SEMI MAXI.
